More Than Dim Sum

Toms', the dim sum place my folks like, in Old Klang Road, serves good dim sum. Their dumplings are all made in-house, by hand. No mass production kitchen, but true busy hands, folding, pleating, tucking and thinning.

However, one of the best non-dim sum dishes is the Seafood Belimbing. Belimbing (or belimbi), used to be a common kitchen or garden shrub. Its small clustered fruit grows on the central trunk of the tree and matures to the size of brazil nuts, when they turn from bright green to a slightly cloudy yellow. The fruit can only be eaten when cooked. It is very sour, with a tacky aftertaste, which is most unpalatable raw.

Seafood and belimbing.
However, when cooked in peanut sauce, it lends dimension to the richness of the gravy. Likewise, in this particular dish, its sharpness tempers the chili and spices of the seafood dish, making it quite amazing. Add the fact that the seafood used is really fresh and plump and juicy, and what you have is a dish which you can eat plates of rice with.
