Dad and mum are getting much too old for this kind of work, but they insisted that the family come together over Christmas and have a real home-cooked meal, as opposed to the cheater's kind of spread that their only daughter usually resorts to. (Not that a hotel-catered, take-away meal is a bad thing!).
So this year, my folks went the whole hog. Mum made her special chicken pie. Actually she made two, because dad always wants one with extra crust, while mum thinks a normally crusted one is more publicly correct to serve.

Dad sliced up turnips (jicama) from scratch, by hand, with no grater or plane, to make this filling for the Nyonya dish called Pie Tee, which are deep-fried flour cups filled with turnip, carrot and yellow bean paste, flavoured with dried cuttlefish. Thankfully, the cups can now be bought in bulk, so he did not need to make them too!

Pie Tee filling is a dicey, back-breaking item to prepare. |
