Breading The Lion

While down in Singapore for an event, I managed to catch up with a dear friend who was quite embarrassed that she could only offer me lunch at a bakery when there was so much better food to be had. Frankly, being Malaysian, with the variety of hawker and squatter food choices we have, Singapore street food is tame! Besides, there is so much bustle in the Lion City, and the food courts get the brunt of it. The perpetual motion scares me, and the focused purpose with which people hunt down their chow is mind boggling.

So it was, with relief, that we ended up at Simply Bread, one of the many, many bakeries/artisanal bread places in Singapore, this one at Guthrie House.

The company of Jenny Tan, wine writer and foodie, made the choices doubly good. I had the salt beef sandwich, perfectly served with hot English mustard, the way all salt beef should be. No Coleman's for me!
Salt beef sandwich S$10.80.
Jenny had the very toasty and moist chicken salad with bacon sandwich, which actually had me salivating.
Chicken salad with bacon sandwich, S$9.63.
I also had a rather stodgy chocolate roll. Pity, as the pastry was really good, but the interior chocolate was just too firm to be luxurious, as a good chocolate roll should be!
Chocolate roll, S$2.67.
