Here's a little break from the casino action and theme park squeals that one associates normally with Genting Highlands! I spotted this new development on the way to Awana Genting Highlands and we stopped on the way down the mountain.

Look beyond the trinkets! |
Upon entry I was about to discount it as just another tourist trap (to be fair, the trinkets and the Angry Birds merchandise were actually quite fairly priced), but a certain smell in the air made me look further. And truly, the smell of organic fertilizer (manure, to be exact), led to this large-ish organic facility.

The mushroom incubator, as I call it. |

Mushrooms up close. |
There is a mushroom section which displays how these loved fungi are grown, with compartments displaying the different growth cycles. There were also some very lovely pearl abalone mushrooms and monkey head mushrooms for sale, at quite decent prices. The abalone mushrooms were RM4 per 500 grams, and were very large, and succulent looking.

A garden of lettuce! |
|
Butterheads up close. |
The other section was dedicated to hydroponic lettuce growing. It was lovely to see butterhead and red and green coral doing so beautifully in their individual planters. Four of any variety cost RM10, a good price because the boxed set of three lettuces in grocery stores are about RM8.There were also French beans, brinjals, sharksfin melon, tomatoes, sweet potatoes and other produce for sale at RM10 for three packets.
And if strawberry picking is your thing, there is also a section for that, with an option to pick and pay, or buy prepacked boxes of strawberries, or derived products like jam, dried stawberries and cordial. Definitely a more natural side of Genting!
