Banana Split

There seems to be a drop in the number of places which serve rawa thosai these days. I miss these lacy, untidy sheets of attar flour dotted with bits of coriander, black pepper and fenugreek, and so was inordinately pleased to find that the Banana Leaf Restaurant did indeed offer this item. The optimist in me ordered two portions, as well as one roti telur and onion.
Nice sign, but that's about it.
A posher kind of mamak.

The wait was pretty long, close to 20 minutes for the food to arrive, about 10 for the drinks. Unfortunately the food was not worth the wait. The rawa thosai tasted as if the mix went slightly awry. There was a distinct feel of rice flour in the flavour, coupled with slightly old, musty spices. The texture of the rawa was brittle, over crisp, and felt like large pieces of dry dandruff. The coconut chutney was nice, though a bit rough and ready, with huge pieces of curry leaf, but even this could not do enough to make the thosai something I would order again, even if it was only RM2 a piece.
The curry was good. The rawa was not.
The texture of the rawa was dismaying.
Decent roti canai, but not worth a trip for this, exclusively.

The roti telur fared slightly better, though by the time I soldiered thorough the thosai, the canai was already starting to cool down and become slightly rubbery. Still, the egg was evenly distributed, and the bread nicely and evenly brown, with the onions soft. I would eat this again for RM2.50 but I'm not sure if I would even return.
Milo is more expensive than coffee?

The bill came up to RM16.50, with Nescafe Ice being RM2.60 and Milo Ice being RM2.70. A bottle of mineral water was RM2.

  1. Wow. I had to see it to believe it. The thosai does fail miserably in the texture department!
The nasi, roti telur (i usually have mine roti telur jantan - 2 eggs - hence jantan :P ) borders on ok to so-so but I havent been back for a while.
And yes, it's a "posher" mamak . hahahaha
