Dolly Mixture

Pretty mix makes a comeback!
Anyone remember this candy from when you were a kid? I sure did! They used to come in rectangular boxes, white, with a picture of the enticing sweets on the front. They vanished from the shelves in my teens and I have yet to see that same old packaging. Still, I was plenty happy to see packs of Dolly Mixtures at Jaya Grocer at Empire Shopping Gallery.

These were bought for Erin by her grandma, but kids should not eat too many sweets, and of course, no mum would think of offering her child something she did not vet for safety first. Tee hee!

This brand of Dolly Mixtures are a lot less brightly coloured than the pastel candy ones I had as a kid. No doubt following the same trend as Smarties whose chocolate buttons are now a lot less eye-catching and glossy than the M&M's plain. This trend replaces all artificial colouring, with natural fruit derived pigments. In Smarties the result is a washed out looking box of faded treats, but in this case, the Dolly Mixture still looked passably pretty and old-fashioned.

The taste is good too, with mild fruit infusion from lemon, strawberry and apple, and of course chocolate. The fruit pastilles are really good - small, but very fruity and natural. The other cubes are also good, with their chew, Skittles-like texture. Good times!
